LOCAL motocross racer Regan Duffy has taken out this year’s 125cc Junior Cup.
Despite coming fifth in the third and final round on the Sunshine Coast on August 19, the 15-year-old had enough points to just edge out runner-up Bailey Malkiewicz.
The latter started the day well, securing the fastest qualifying time on his last lap at 1:42.793, followed by Mason Semmens at 1:45.967 and Jack Kukas at 1:46.149.
In race one, Semmens took the holeshot but after just four turns, Malkiewicz took the race lead, which he held until the end.
Kukas had moved to second, pushing Semmens to third but at the last lap, Duffy made his move to take out second place from Kukas in third.
In race two, Noah Ferguson had the home track advantage to take the holeshot, which he held until lap three where Semmens took the lead and Malkiewicz moved to second.
But as the race reached its closing stages, Malkiewicz charged past Semmens to take the win, with Ferguson in third and Duffy 10th after crashing in the final lap.
Malkiewicz claimed the round victory with 70 points, followed by Semmens on 60 and Kukas on 58, but Duffy managed to hold on to the title with 190 points from Malkiewicz on 186 and Semmens on 185.
“I’m a little bit busted up but I’m stoked to come away with the overall for the year,” Duffy said.
“The track wasn’t your typical sand track; I was hoping for some big rollers and stuff but it turned out to be quite choppy and square edged, which ended up catching me out.
